Force Wifi 6E / Wifi 7 to use 6 GHz on Windows 11
Windows will sometimes use a stronger 2.4 or 5 GHz connection instead of the weaker but faster 6 GHz. To force 6 GHz:
- Open Device Manager
- Under Network adapters, find your Wi-Fi adapter
- It will likely say "Wi-Fi 6E" or "Wi-Fi 7" or similar in the name
- Right click on the adapter -> Properties
- Advanced tab, find Preferred Band in the Property list
- Select Prefer 6GHz band
Once the network connection is back up, disconnect Wifi intentionally, then turn it back on. I find changing the settings to not work until Wifi is turned off / on.
To validate you're on 6 GHz:
- Open Settings, then select Network & Internet from the sidebar
- Your connected network should be listed by name
- The Properties section should say the type of network (Public or Private) and the band (6 GHz).
- If the information is not shown, click on Properties and look for Network band (channel).
